Whitesburg, TN

Knoxville, Tennessee

Whitesburg, Tennessee, emerged from humble beginnings between 1783 and 1785, founded by pioneering families such as the Lanes and the Whites, and has grown into a tranquil village of about 3,600 people.  Its development was significantly shaped by the establishment of Hamblen County’s first church, Bent Creek Church, and the arrival of the railroad in 1856, which spurred economic growth and made Whitesburg a bustling town by 1870, surpassing Morristown in size. The town flourished with a variety of businesses, schools, and industries, including the famed Epsom Springs Hotel that attracted tourists to the region's mineral springs. However, the advent of the 11-E Highway and the Great Depression led to a shift in the business district and a change in the town's dynamics. The nearby Three Springs community, known for its healing waters adds to the area's rich heritage. Despite changes over the years, Whitesburg has retained its character, marked by a blend of history, community spirit, and the enduring legacy of its founding families.

Beyond the plates and palates, Whitesburg is home to peculiar tales and landmarks.

On the evening of December 6, 1953, passersby near Bent Creek Cemetery observed a peculiar red light hovering above headstones in the historic late 18th-century graveyard. Intrigued, a group returned the next night, watching from their cars. To their astonishment, they witnessed the reappearance of a large red orb drifting through the cemetery.
